Larry Decker, a struggling artist and part-time barista, is two months behind in his rent and is about to be evicted. But there is hope on the horizon. Charlton, the owner of a bizarre and off-the-wall match-making service, offers Larry a convoluted way to alleviate his financial woes. And Margaret, a novice painter and hard-working interior designer has agreed to meet Larry for coffee and a discussion on art. Is this the beginning of something special? What could possibly go wrong?
Painting the Cat began as a full-length play called What Are Friends For. A staged reading of What Are Friends For took place in 2014 at the Shenkman Arts Centre, Ottawa, Ontario, by Tale Wagging Theatre, directed by Arras Hopkins. The reading received an ARTicipate Endowment Fund grant. In 2024, the play was rewritten as a one-act play and the title changed to Painting the Cat.
